Acoustic instrumentation, slinky grooves and psychedelic instrumental break... dramatic folk-soul vibe.... Exclaim.CA Music
Dynamic new song.... crams many disparate sounds into four minutes – from strings to a psychedelic guitar solo to chiming mandolins nodding to Led Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore." Rolling Stone
A neo-folk acoustic track.... Consequence of Sound
Acoustic Stomp.... Stereo Gum
The track opens with an eerie acoustic guitar and Cornell singing: ‘Every time I stare into the sun, trying to find a reason to go on.’
He later sings: ‘When you came along the time was right/pull me like an apple red and ripe/wasn’t very long you took a bite and it did me wrong and it serves me right/And I nearly forgot my broken heart/it’s taken me miles away/from the the memory of how we broke apart/here we go round again/every little key unlocks the door/every little secret has a lie.’ He also sings, ‘Every little word upon your lips/makes a little cut where blood pours out/every little drop of blood I kiss/that I won’t miss not for anything.’ There is also a throwback 60’s guitar solo that sounds somewhat reminiscent of The Screaming Trees.
While it is hard to form a full opinion just a couple listens in, instrumentally and arrangement wise this sounds more well put together than most of Scream and Carry On, and should appeal more to Cornell’s core fanbase.
