SG is one of those bands that is really admired by fellow musicians.....Im pretty sure from all the bands that came out of the "grunge" scene, SG would be the one that would garner the most praise from fellow "rockers"....Over the years ive come across tons of articles where other musicians mention theyre praise towards them or liking of them..... I just came across this one today.....From the singer of Queensryche (a seattle brother)...
............
I guess you’re kind of a Seattle rock expert by now, so give me a little comment about the following Seattle bands, starting with Heart.
TATE: Heart was a very influential band from this area. They were one of the first to have international success. The wrote really interesting records. They were the band that all the other Seattle bands looked up to.
What about Nirvana?
TATE: They’re an interesting band. I am not so much a Nirvana fan, as far as their music is concerned, but there are a couple of songs I like.
I guess Jimi Hendrix was first.
TATE: Yes, Jimi was incredibly influential. There is a beautiful statue of him in Seattle.
Pearl Jam.
TATE: They’re one of the more successful bands from Seattle. They’re still together and releasing records. That’s an admirable thing.
I guess Duff McKagen is from Seattle, so there is a Guns N’ Roses connection.
TATE: I’ve actually done some shows with Duff, the various different musical groups he has been in, and he’s a really nice guy.
And the Foo Fighters. They might be the biggest American band right now.
TATE: Oh yeah, they’re huge. Yeah, I think so. They’re right up there. Hey, you never asked me about Soundgarden.
Oh? Yeah, I had them on my little list, but I was thinking too many grunge bands. But yeah, what do you think of Soundgarden?
TATE: In my opinion, I prefer Soundgarden to the others. Everyone in the band, they’re nice people. I really admire what they’ve done.
...........................
That brother went out of his way to get a few words in about SG....bought them up himself....

........this doesnt have to do with the original thread title but its an article i just came across and i definitely think the guy has a point regarding perception..... I think that theyre are alot of young "metal" guys that equate SG with a song like BHS and miscategorized them without having every really listened to them....I just dont think most rock/music fans realize how good/gangsta they really are, and how surprised theyde be if the divulged into their catalogue.... ....but SG doesnt do themselves any favors.....They come out of a 15 year retirement to drop Been Away Too Long and then Halfway There on the masses. Been Away Too Long,i obviously get, given the meaning....but the track itself is kinda weak compared to their standards....but then to follow that up with Halfway There....Thats just some self sabotaging BS right there. Drop some damn wierded out/jammed out heavyness for mass radio consumption Youre f******n Soundgarden....You dont come back after 15 years and put out Halfway There to follow up Been Away Too Long...... .....Blow the roof off the sumbich ............................... www.reddit.com/r/LetsTalkMusic/comments/5r1360/lets_talk_can_a_bandartist_be_both_popular_and/

The Rychers have some awesome jams, and Geoff Tate is a great singer. he could learn a lesson or two from SG about treating his fellow band mates When that Degarmo dude left... the band's fire/sound def. took a hit. Good link mah brotha. Some good points in the commentary. Sans Oasis, haha. I'm being playfully bias cuz of that time they cracked on INXS. (what's the story) Morning Glory is probably my fave tune of theirs. Soundgarden is for sure a musicians musician type of band. Highly respected and regarded. Even today, they still steer away from arena type venues, opting for the 2-5,000 seat venues. Ben footloose and fancy free Shepherd is a punk rocker to the core. Probably wouldn't wanna deal with the average joe fan screaming for... yeah, Black hole sun. In fact, now that i think about it... at the detroit show i heard a guy go... i hope they play the black hole sun tune. Not that every concert goer is gonna know all of a band's music, but geez.. so much more in SG's catalog. I'm amazed too at how SG has pretty much toured or performed on their own terms. That dude who had the live guide (sadly i think it's been taken down) had all the tours listed. The boys barely played in 91, 93, or 95. The Lollapaloozas of 92 and 94 were huge tours and probably nice on the bank accounts. The roar of 94. Ah yeah babe. Kim's like, I"m in chill mode. but yeah, the brother better get back out and put Sunno)))) back on the speakers. n start coming up with some heavy riffage.

......and with as weak as hard rock is now, it would be nice if SG just hit the radio air waves in beast mode..... Halfway freakin There.....I'll never get over that one.
Alice in Chains, who are my 2nd (a distant 2nd) favorite 90's band and whom i dont listen to often at all anymore, they did it right with their radio selections... That last album they did, they dropped Stone and Hollow on the radio.....Thats the initial perception they gave. Thats the sound youre gonna equate them with. Youre some young metal jabroni that never listened to a SG album but know them from Black Hole Sun, you hear Halfway There as their comeback, and thats all you know, your perception is formed. Now youre gonna have a misinformed idea of what SG is about, and SG did this to you themselves. Now youre never gonna search and discover Limo Wreck...4th Of July...Room A Thousand Years Wide...Birth Ritual...Blind Dogs...Overfloater...Never The Machine Forever... etc etc etc.....(like 50 other awesome song etcetras worth) Let Matt and Ben steer the ship.....Have Chris as a deck hand.....and throw Kim in the Kitchen to peel the potatos

I get your point though. Their mega heaviness was always on LPs, not really singles...

Sometimes i'll read something ive posted in the past on here and tell myself "i sound like a moron"....Sometimes I'll get a thought in my head and just post what im thinking without articulating it properly...
Right after Cornell died, I went to my parents building on the late night to shoot the breeze with the doorman who is an old friend of mine. This other guy from the neighborhood was also in the lobby hanging out. So i started talking about how messed up i was over Cornells passing. The other guy that was there is more into metal and old hard core. He was telling me how back in the day he saw SG a couple of times but said something to the effect of "we were like forget Soundgarden, we're here to see so and so.." A few minutes later i threw on Fresh Tendrils on my cel phone.....Next thing you know i see that same guy bobbing his head and he goes to me "who's that"... Then i threw on some live version of Room A Thousand Years Wide....That demo version of Fell On Black Days from i think it was pearl jams studio...The dude was loving it. I could tell what the deal was.....He was some 80's metal head that equates SG with Nirvana and Pearl Jam (sound wise) and Black Hole Sun and has no idea of what SG is really about. As soon as he heard some riffs and roars in the lobby that night, he was thrown for a loop.
SG is (actually WAS...i cant believe its past tense for good now) such a charismatic and rocking band that they shouldve come out the gates in beast mode. To me, releasing Halfway There as a single was them looking for some commercial appeal, with a song no where near SG standards. And to put it out after Been Away Too Long which to me was so so,just wasnt a good recipe for presenting their comeback. I wouldve went Blood On The Valley Floor and Taree....or something along those lines....Non State Actor and Bones Of Birds...anyway
As far as my Matt n Ben steering the ship....Cornell,deck hand...Kim,peeling potatos comment......As I was thinking about KA in general and Halfway There one day, I came across a SG jam and started telling myself "why dont they release something like this on the masses instead of throwing Halfway There out there and kinda went nuts (within).....and then just started thinking about SG in the present in general. Matt, he's the back bone of the music. He's going all out,all the time. He just brings it.When he's in SG mode you what youre getting. Ben, he's a hard core dude and he's all about SG so i just trust his vision of what they should sound like. Halfway There was Cornells doing.Thats where the "deck hand" came in. I dont know what he was thinking to think that would be a good/Successful SG tune...and Kim, to me, the guitar on that last album left alot to be desired (and even much more so in live settings). Not to mention how before the album dropped Kim was talking about all this "heavyness". ....Someone gotta peel the potatoes....n I love me some Kim, but I'm just keeping it real to my feelings.
To make a long story short.....While i was thinking to myself about them releasing Halfway There and what i thought were a bunch of Kims lack luster moments, I came across this jam and started telling myself "why arent they releasing stuff like this on the masses instead" and got worked up...
As the poster says in the description.....listen to the jam starting at 5:10....Ah yeah babe....Thats some SG right there....Listen to that jam. Kim ripping it up.... and instead of that, they were putting Halfway There out there nd Kim was busy creating solos like Eyelids Mouth and random noise (half assing it) on Worse Dreams.Come on.
.....and in an interview a while after KA's release you heard Matt mention how on their next album he would want more guitars blazing and he said with a facial expression of emphasis. Like he wanted to let loose that SG beast. I just hope we get to hear something down the road.

^^^Great article. We already know how amazing Chris was, but it is always nice to hear others say it too. I've always felt Chris was a musician's musician. Someone who knows how to create music can see even moreso than a non-musician how truly phenomenal his talent was. Such a huge loss...

You just don't get it, do you? You talk as if your opinion is just the end all, be all. Especially after Chris's death, do you still not realize how dark and powerful songs like Halfway There and Worse Dreams are? You seem to be so stuck on a certain sound that you have set for this band that it completely blocks you from seeing what they were doing with these songs. Your buddies sound like they are as close minded as you are.
Kim is half assing it on Worse Dreams? Smh, you're absolutely lost.
Chris is responsible for writing some of this bands darkest and heaviest riffs. Arguably even more so than Kim or any of the other guy's, and I think Been Away Too Long goes a lot deeper and darker than what you're boxing it in as. You seem to think you know more about what this band should be doing with their music than they do. This wasn't your typical band, they knew exactly what they were doing. I'll just leave it at that. Think on it, or don't. Continue talking to yourself. I'm out.

I'm probably wasting my time and others replying to a post that's 3 years old, but seeing as I'm new here, I feel I might as well live up to my username and defend Kim here. It seems to me that the solo on Eyelids Mouth is being played by Mike McCready. He get's a credit for playing on the song, and the tone of the solo sounds totally like him.
But saying Kim should be peeling potatoes! WTF! Leaving Ben to steer the ship? The ship which Kim built and sailed for seven years before reaching Port Ben? The ship which Kim has lovingly restored with all the work he put into the Badmotorfinger & Superunknown reissues? You go too far!

No doubt....I hear you ma brotha. Kim can steer the ship like a BOSS and all will be well in SG land. When it comes to, as Kim would say "adding color" to the rhythm section or laying down heavy riffs, that brother is the MASTER... But on Kind Animal, the guitars were lacking in general.I cant think of the last half of the album off hand..but you take songs in succession like Black Saturday, Halfway There,Worse Dreams and Eyelids Mouth...those were all lacking and they came in succession...even Rowing, which I think was an awesome song..the guitar wasnt doing it on any of those....And live an in concert during the reunion, Kim's soloing wasnt up to par...No way...It all sounded either the same or half baked... ....n I love Kim...
