Today marks 19 years since the release of Down on the Upside, Soundgarden's 5th Album and what could have easily been there last. Just imagine that.... actually no don't - such a terrible thought! While some may call it Soundgarden's most ambitious album, others were more critical and disliked the departure from the heavier sound. Ben Shepherd called the album "the most accurate picture of what Soundgarden actually sounds like,"..... "It's way more raw. It's way more honest. It's way more 'responsible.'"So what are your thoughts about DOTUS as an album and what are your favourite tracks? If you haven't spun the album in a while, nows a great chance! Like all Sougarden albums... I love it. It is a great progression from Superunknown and it fits perfectly amongst the entire Soundgarden catalogue. At first I didn't give the album as a whole package the love it deserved... I would tend to skip some tracks, but as time went on I began to appreciate it as a whole. The way albums are meant to be enjoyed. I'm no good at picking favourite tracks.... they change all the time. However Tighter Tighter is amazing, as is Overfloater, Zero chance, Dusty.... oh man I don't know! Your Turn......

I absolutely love it. It is perfect from start to finish and is indeed a natural progression as I expected it would be. I guess I can understand the die hard heavy fans who were disappointed back then. I bet if they listen again now that they are almost 20 years older, they would also like it if not love it.
For me it's also impossible to pick a favorite...Tighter probably. Ty Cobb is my go-to song whenever I feel down and need a laugh.
I also love Switch Opens...Hell I love the whole album

My favorite Soundgarden album to this day. Shows them at their most versatile and diverse. From Ty Cobb to Tighter and Tighter to Applebite... tremendous stuff.
And yeah... 19 years? Wow.

19 years already???....This is heinous.... Another great album by SG...Personally i wouldve liked one or two more tracks on the heavier, more "rocking" side....kinda like Rhinosaur, with the uptempo heavy riff.... that being said, the album itself is great.
Tighter&Tighter is SG perfection....Overfloater,Dusty,Switch Opens,Zero Chance...Certified gems... ..... BUTOW,Never The Machine Forever, Pretty Noose,Rhinosaur etc....its just a great album....
......Blow Up The Outside World, that one i like alot better live.

Hard to believe it's been 19 years! Sheeesh. DOTU is a mighty fine album for sure. I mean, it kicks ass right from the get go with Pretty Noose--one of my very favourites. Dusty, Rhinosaur, Burden, all good. Tighter and Tighter with one of the best guitar solos, Overfloater, Ty Cobb, No Attention etc etc. I could go on.... so many excellent tracks. I agree with you, Nick, BUTOW is so much better live. And Boot Camp!!! That song is just too damn short. Could go for another few minutes...wonderful tune.

D on the Upside. Ah yeah babe. I think that record (speaking from the time frame of when it was released) initially had the approval of Chris n Ben, Kim thought they were moving away from the heavy riffage. Obviously not as heavy as previous albums, but there's some good nasty moments. No Attention, T & T, Ty cobb, Rhino... Chris and Ben on the mango and mangolin And Matt's cool moody moog stuff on Applebite, sounds he used on the Wellwater Consp. albums. Like The Reverend's wohhhhhh, wooooo. ending on Dusty. Didn't we do a SU DOTU comparison on the old forum? Don't think it ever got finished. Sista Cmbk, Switch opens. Ah yeah babe. the lyric alone. Nothing is when everything is all right. I equate that to when one is just chillin, reminiscing, immersed in another, like time is standing still, and means nothing. Gather around and fall right down Ah yeah babe

It's not a favorite of mines. To me, it wasn't as good as Superunknown.
I like Pretty Noose, Zero Chance, Ty Cobb, Blow Up The Outside World, Burden in my Hand and Boot Camp. Everything else.... Eh....
Although Dusty sounds much better live. They played an amazing version of it when I saw them in Philly.

Nice write up....
I never thought of that....that that album was like the end of a "type of music"...like the end of that HEAVY rock era.... Thats some gangsta sh*t right there...... They redifined what heavy rock sounded like....and shut it down with their departure. It started and ended with them
